Once you know a handful of rules, you can read aloud a word you have never seen before. The difficulty for English speakers is not the spelling, it is breaking a few habits that feel perfectly natural in English: gliding vowels, swallowing unstressed syllables and ignoring double letters.

In this guide we look at the vowels, the consonants that change sound (C, G, SC, Z, R), the famous double consonants, the sounds GLI and GN, word stress, and the mistakes English speakers make most often. The respellings in brackets (like CHAH-o) are only an approximation for English readers; the stressed syllable is in capitals.

Italian vowels: short, clear and never swallowed

Italian has five vowel letters: a, e, i, o, u. Three rules make most of the difference:

Every vowel is pronounced. There is no “silent e” and no vowel that shrinks into the neutral “uh” sound of English about or banana. Pasta ends with a full [a], not “past-uh”.

Vowels are pure. English speakers tend to glide: no becomes “noh-oo”, say becomes “seh-ee”. In Italian the mouth stays still for the whole vowel: no is a short, clean [o].

Unstressed vowels keep their quality. In banana all three A’s sound the same in Italian, while in English only the middle one is a real [a].

Letter

Sounds like…

Italian examples

a

the a in father, but shorter

casa (house), pane (bread)

e

closed: like ay in day without the glide
open: like e in bet

sera (evening), perché (why)
bello (beautiful), caffè (coffee)

i

the ee in see, but short

vino (wine), libri (books)

o

closed: like o in go without the glide
open: like o in British lot, but longer

sole (sun), dove (where)
cosa (thing), però (but)

u

the oo in food, but short

luna (moon), uva (grapes)

Open and closed E and O

In standard Italian, e and o each have an open and a closed sound, so the language has seven vowel sounds but only five letters. A few words are told apart only by this difference: pèsca with an open E means “peach”, pésca with a closed E means “fishing”. Don’t worry too much about it: the distinction changes from region to region, and many native speakers don’t follow the standard. Italians will understand you either way. What matters far more is keeping the vowels pure and pronouncing all of them.

C and G: hard or soft?

This is the most important spelling rule in Italian. The sound of C and G depends on the letter that follows.

Spelling

Sound

Examples

ca, co, cu

hard [k] as in cat

casa, cosa, cuore (heart)

ce, ci

soft, like ch in church

cena (dinner), cinema

che, chi

hard [k]

che (what), chiesa (church), zucchine

ga, go, gu

hard [g] as in go

gatto (cat), gola (throat), gusto (taste)

ge, gi

soft, like j in jam

gelato, giro (tour, lap)

ghe, ghi

hard [g]

spaghetti, funghi (mushrooms)

Notice that in Italian H makes a sound harder, which is the opposite of English, where ch is soft. A single r is a quick tap, very similar to the tt in American English butter or better. A double rr is a full roll (trill): caro (dear) vs carro (cart), pera (pear) vs terra (earth). The English R, with the tongue curled back, is one of the clearest signs of an English accent. R is also always pronounced, even at the end of a syllable: porta (door), per (for).

H is always silent

At the start of a word, H is never pronounced: hai (you have) sounds exactly like ai (to the), hanno (they have) sounds like anno (year). Inside a word it only changes the sound of C and G, as we saw above.

Z: “ts” or “dz”

Italian z is never the buzzing z of zoo. It sounds either like ts in cats or like dz in adze, depending on the word (and partly on the region): pizza is “PEET-tsa”, grazie (thank you) is “GRAHT-tsyeh”, zero is “DZEH-ro”.

P, T and K without a puff of air

In English, p, t and k at the start of a stressed syllable come with a small puff of air (try saying pin with your hand in front of your mouth). In Italian there is no puff: pane, tavolo, casa. Also, Italian t and d are made with the tongue touching the back of the upper teeth, not the ridge behind them.

S: “s” or “z”

S is usually voiceless, as in sun: sole, pasta, rosso. It becomes a voiced [z] before b, d, g, l, m, n, r, v: sbaglio (mistake), smettere (to stop), svelto (quick). Between two vowels (casa, rosa) the pronunciation changes by region: northern Italians say [z], many southern Italians say [s]. Both are correct.

Double consonants: the key to sounding Italian

In English, double letters are just spelling: the tt in butter or the pp in happy sound the same as a single letter. In Italian a double consonant is a longer consonant, and it can change the meaning of a word completely.

Single consonant

Double consonant

caro (dear, expensive)

carro (cart)

sete (thirst)

sette (seven)

nono (ninth)

nonno (grandfather)

pala (shovel)

palla (ball)

capello (a hair)

cappello (hat)

papa (pope)

pappa (baby food)

fato (fate)

fatto (done; fact)

And the classic one: wish someone buon anno (happy new year) with a clear double N. With a single N, ano means “anus”.

How to pronounce a double consonant

English actually has long consonants, but only across two words. Say black cat, bookcase or big gun naturally: you don’t pronounce two separate K’s or G’s, you hold one consonant a little longer. That is exactly an Italian double consonant.

For p, t, c (k), b, d, g: close the mouth (or press the tongue) and hold the silence for a moment before releasing: tutto = “toot-to”, cappuccino = “kap-poot-CHEE-no”.

For m, n, l, r, s, f, v: simply stretch the sound: mamma, anno, bella, rosso.

The vowel before a double consonant is shorter, the vowel before a single one is slightly longer: pala = “PAAH-la”, palla = “PAHL-la”.

Doubles also exist with soft sounds: faccia (face) = “FAHT-cha”, oggi (today) = “OD-jee”, pizza = “PEET-tsa”.

GLI and GN

These two sounds don’t exist in English, but you can get very close to them.

GN, like “ny” in “canyon”

GN is the same sound as Spanish ñ or the ny in canyon: gnocchi = “NYOK-kee”, lasagna = “la-ZAH-nya”, bagno (bathroom) = “BAH-nyo”, signora = “see-NYO-ra”. The G is never pronounced as a separate sound: “g-nocchi” is a typical mistake.

GLI, like “lli” in “million”

GLI sounds a bit like the lli in million, but in one single sound: press the middle of your tongue flat against the roof of your mouth and say “l” and “y” together. Examples: figlio (son) = “FEE-lyo”, famiglia = “fa-MEE-lya”, aglio (garlic) = “AH-lyo”, and the article gli (the) = “lyee”. Again, the G is not pronounced separately.

In a few words of learned origin, GL is a hard G followed by L, just like in English glad: glicine (wisteria), glicemia (blood sugar), anglicano, negligente. Before a, e, o, u, GL is always hard: gloria, inglese (English).

Between two vowels, GN and GLI are naturally long, a little like double consonants: bagno sounds almost like “BAHN-nyo”.

Where does the stress go?

Most Italian words are stressed on the second-to-last syllable: amico (a-MEE-ko), parlare (par-LAH-reh), signora. But there are exceptions, and the stress is usually not marked:

Last syllable: the stress is always written with an accent: città (city), caffè (coffee), perché (why), però (but).

Third-to-last syllable: no written accent, so you just have to learn them: tavolo (TAH-vo-lo, table), macchina (MAHK-kee-na, car), telefono (te-LEH-fo-no), musica (MOO-zee-ka).

Verbs in the “they” form keep the stress of the singular: parla → parlano (PAR-la-no, not par-LAH-no), abitano (AH-bee-ta-no).

Common mistakes English speakers make

Many Italian words entered English through food and music, often with an English pronunciation.
